The Farm Story: Finca El Porvenir, Polochic Valley, Guatemala

Producer: Laurent Maniet

In Alta Verapaz, hundreds of tributaries gather into the Rio Polochic, winding northeast as they carve slow shapes through the Sierra de las Minas range before meeting the gulf Atlantic. Rich soils formed the Polochic Valley, where Laurent Maniet and his family steward a living agroforestry system.

El Porvenir began as an abandoned coffee plantation, degraded by monocropping. The first act was repair. Existing shade trees were nurtured, new trees planted, and a multilayered regenerative agroforestry system designed from the ground up. Criollo cacao varieties grew within an architecture shaped by strategic use of trees, shrubs, crops, and livestock. Fertility has been rebuilt through time, care, and biodiversity.

Laurent’s work centers on deep care through the preservation of criollo varieties. Heirloom cacao expresses diversity through cross-pollination and natural variation. Each pod reflects this richness. After harvest, beans are individually selected to recover criollo, separating the white-pigmented beans from darker beans associated with other varieties. The result is cacao with distinct texture, clarity, and depth.

From seed selection to planting environment, fermentation, and roasting, the intention is singular: cacao with remarkable natural and beneficial properties. Each harvest reflects the full chain of care, from tree to ritual drinking cacao or cacao bar.

Guatemala is at the roots of the Numinous story. It is one of the most stamped countries in my passport, shaped by over a decade of travel working closely with smallholder coffee producers in the highlands during my previous career. It is where I met my cacao mentor, built relationships with producers, and went deep into cacao as an agricultural, cultural, and spiritual practice. It is where the spirit of cacao first pulled me in.

This is a direct sourcing story. I've developed my relationship with Laurent, and bring El Porvenir in without intermediaries. Finca El Porvenir is not just farm, it's a place where land restoration, community stewardship, and deep cacao integrity intersect. Numinous exists to carry this spirit forward, honoring cacao as both agricultural craft and living medicine, rooted in its native home.

Ingredients:
77% single farm traceable Cacao, 23% organic regenerative cane sugar
6.4g sugar per 28g (half bar) serving

A Note on Allergens and Additives:

We stone grind our traceable cacao in machines also making delicious things from tree nuts. Apart from that, we do not use emulsifiers like lecithins, or other additives like vanilla.

When we add sugar, it is intentional. We only use traceable, raw, organically and regeneratively grown cane sugar. We add sugar for the purpose of attenuating the innate power of cacao to meet our limited palates, increasing our receptivity to the delight in every morsel.

A Note on Shipping:

Shipping is not a profit center for us, and our goal is to pass along the lowest possible rate. That being said, shipping just one bar has outsized costs. We recommend our 3-bar or 6-bar boxes for the best value on shipping.
