The Farm Story: Finca Kampura
In Izabal, near the Carribean coast of Guatemala, 800 hectares that were once worn cattle pasture are now a vibrant, multilayered forest ecosystem. The transformation began in 2011, when the team behind Kampura set out to rebuild what had been lost. Since then, they've planted more than 700,000 trees across its rolling hills, restoring soil health with mahogany, native rubber, and Honduran rosewood standing alongside heirloom cacao and cardamom.
The name Kampura comes from Miskito, a language spoken along nearby Nicaragua's Caribbean coast, where it is said to mean "beautiful woman". They chose the name to mark the quiet resilience and innate attraction of the land itself, and credit the Miskito community for helping shape their understanding of the word.
Cacao here grows under a mixed canopy rather than in open rows, following an approach closer to nature, the way cacao has been tended ancestrally by Mayan communities. Harvest, fermentation and drying all happen at the farm. This is a partnership with their Qʼeqchiʼ Maya neighbors, built around living-income wages and skills training, with the farm's own leadership drawn from the surrounding community.
Their deep intention has been recognized well outside Izabal. Kampura has placed among the global top 50 at the Cacao of Excellence Awards in both 2023 and 2025, earning a regional bronze medal each of those years, and holds a designation from the Heirloom Cacao Preservation Fund, one of fewer than 30 such origins worldwide. Guatemala's National Forest Institute has also recognized the farm for its integral forest management.
Our relationship with Kampura adds a new thread to the Numinous sourcing map: cacao grown not in a rainforest interior but on ground that spent decades as bananaland, then pastureland, before being deliberately rebuilt into a living forest, tree by tree, over more than a decade. This is the way forward.
Ingredients
100% heritage cacao
A Note on Allergens and Additives
We stone grind our traceable cacao in machines also making delicious things from tree nuts. Apart from that, we do not use emulsifiers like lecithins, or other additives like vanilla.
When we add sugar, it is intentional. We only use traceable, raw, organically and regeneratively grown cane sugar. We add sugar for the purpose of attenuating the innate power of cacao to meet our limited palates, increasing our receptivity to the delight in every morsel.
A Note on Shipping
Shipping is not a profit center for us, and our goal is to pass along the lowest possible rate. That being said, shipping just one bar has outsized costs. We recommend our 3-bar or 6-bar boxes for the best value on shipping.
